Class 1 Medical: Commercial Pilots

The Class 1 medical certificate is the required standard of aviation health and is mandatory for anyone holding a Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL) or an Airline Transport Licence (ATPL). As commercial pilots are responsible for hundreds of lives at a time, sometimes flying long haul, through complex weather conditions, or managing emergency situations, it’s important that their physical fitness is very good.

As part of the medical, an AME will thoroughly evaluate:

Due to the demanding nature of the job, class 1 certificates must be renewed annually, or every 6 months for older pilots (aged over 40 engaging in single-pilot passenger flights, or over the age of 60). 

Class 2 Medical: Private Pilots

The Class 2 medical is designed for private pilots holding a Private Pilot Licence (PPL). While the safety of the airspace remains paramount, the standards are slightly less stringent than those for commercial pilots, reflecting the non-commercial nature of their flights. However, the examination still involves a comprehensive physical check-up, including vision and hearing tests, to ensure the pilot will not suffer any sudden incapacitation while in control of the aircraft.

Class 3 Medical: Air Traffic Controllers

Whilst Air Traffic Controllers (ATCO) do not fly aircraft, they are in charge of managing the flow of aircraft in the sky and on the ground. This responsibility requires intense concentration, excellent spatial awareness, and the ability to maintain composure when managing high stress situations. The class 3 aviation medical focuses heavily on vision, hearing, and cognitive health, ensuring ATCOs can communicate and process complex information without impairment.

Cabin Crew Medicals

Cabin Crew members are frequently underestimated as primarily customer service representatives, however, in reality, their primary role is passenger safety. Should there be an emergency, cabin crew take charge of evacuations, administer first aid, and manage panicked passengers. A cabin crew medical examination ensures they have suitable physical stamina, mobility, and the visual and auditory acuity necessity to carry out such important duties and the standards are set by relevant aviation bodies including the ULK CAA and EASA etc.
